Macron, Scholz and Tusk, worried about the situation in Georgia

The leaders of France, Germany and Poland expressed their concern on Thursday about the political situation in Georgia.

Several thousand Georgians have taken to the streets of Tbilisi this week to protest the outcome of last month's parliamentary elections, accusing the ruling Georgian Dream party of vote-rigging.

The Moscow-friendly Georgian Dream party - which has been in power since 2012 - said it won 54 percent of the vote.

Even the pro-European president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, does not accept the result of the elections, saying that there were major manipulations and interference by Russia. In a joint statement, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said they could not support the opening of EU membership negotiations for Georgia unless the country makes reforms.

"If Georgia does not depart from this path it has taken and does not prove that it is making clear efforts for reforms, especially by repealing the new legislation that contradicts European values ??and principles, then we will not be able to support the opening of negotiations for membership with Georgia", they said.

They released this communiqué on Thursday morning, on the day when nearly 50 European leaders will gather in Budapest for two days of talks on support for Ukraine, immigration and economic security./ Rel
