Germany arrests an American on espionage charges

An American, a former employee of US forces stationed in Germany, has been arrested on suspicion of offering to pass information about them to China, German prosecutors said on November 7.

According to prosecutors, the arrested person, identified only as Martin D., is being held "under suspicion of expressing the will to undertake intelligence activities for a foreign intelligence service." Prosecutors added that he had "contacted Chinese officials in 2024 and offered to give them sensitive information about the US military."

German prosecutors said he was arrested in Frankfurt on Thursday and his home searched.

According to them, he had worked for the US forces "until recently" and had offered to give China "information that he had thanks to his work for the US forces".

The investigation was conducted "in close coordination" with German intelligence, prosecutors said.

Last month, Germany said it had tightened checks on staff in sensitive government and business areas, after fears of espionage grew.

In Germany, there is an increase in suspected cases of espionage related to Russia, since the war in Ukraine began, but also cases of espionage for China.

The most high-profile case of alleged espionage for China involves an aide to a far-right member of the European Parliament. He was arrested in April on suspicion of spying for Beijing./REL
