Donald Trump's victory/ Uncertainty and hope for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was among the first world leaders to congratulate the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump. VOA's Anna Chernikova reports from Kiev that many Ukrainians say they fear Mr. Trump could fulfill a campaign promise to end the war by forcing Ukraine to sign a settlement that would favor Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Mr. Donald Trump on his victory in the presidential election on Tuesday. He called it an "impressive" victory and said he appreciated Mr Trump's commitment to a "peace through strength" approach to dealing with global issues. But the reactions are different on the streets of Kiev.

"We can expect everything from him. He can continue the policy of Mr. Biden's administration, he can be worse, or better," says Mykhailo, a resident of Kyiv.

"He said the war would end within 24 hours of becoming president. We are waiting," says Myroslava, a resident of the Ukrainian capital.

Political analyst, Volodymyr Fesenko, says that the attitude of many people in Ukrainian society towards Mr. Trump reflects the difference in opinions about how the war with Russia should end.

"A part of society favors the continuation of resistance to Russian aggression. They consider any concession to Russia unfair. Another part is in favor of starting negotiations".

Many Ukrainians are asking the question of what will be the first steps of President Trump's administration towards Russia and Ukraine after returning to the White House.

Some are wary of pressuring Ukraine for a deal that would force it to capitulate on the battlefield and abandon its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Adding to the loss of Ukraine, some say Mr Trump's victory raises hopes for decisive action to end the long and costly war./VOA
