The Swiss village threatened by falling rocks will be evacuated again

A small Swiss village – which received worldwide attention last year when it was forced to evacuate residents because part of a mountain collapsed on top of it – must evacuate residents again.

The news was announced by local officials on Saturday.

The municipality of Albula in eastern Switzerland, which also includes the village of Brienz, said there is a risk of rockfall, as happened in June last year when falling rocks almost hit it.

"The leadership team of the Albula municipality... is prepared for the evacuation of the residents of Brienz as a preventive measure", said the municipality in X.

An informational meeting with residents will be held Saturday at 7 p.m., she said.

In May 2023, the authorities had ordered the 84 villagers to leave the village, due to fears that it could be covered by falling rocks.

When the rockfall nearly hit the village a month later, only a few farmers were allowed to return temporarily and settled in huts in nearby fields./REL
