Dutch police stop pro-Palestinian protest after soccer violence

Police in Amsterdam broke up a pro-Palestinian protest on Sunday after a court upheld a ban on demonstrations in the Dutch capital following clashes involving Israeli soccer fans this week.

Hundreds of protesters defied the ban and gathered in the center of the Dutch capital, where they chanted calls for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip and "Freedom for Palestine".

But after the court upheld the ban imposed by the city authorities, the police intervened, instructing the protesters to disperse.

Several people were dragged away by police officers, Reuters news agency reports.

Authorities decided on Friday to ban protests for the next three days, following attacks on Israeli soccer fans after a match on Thursday between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax Amsterdam.

At least five people were injured on Friday when Israeli fans were attacked by what Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema described as "anti-Semitic groups".

Prosecutors said late Saturday that four suspects are being held in custody for violent acts, including two minors, and that 40 people were fined for public disturbance and 10 for other offenses, including vandalism.

They said they expect to make more arrests.

A large group of Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were seen in a video posted online by the Bender news site armed with sticks, pipes and stones, and twice brawling with opponents as they marched into the city after the match.

The video has not been verified by Reuters.

Anti-Semitic incidents have increased significantly in the Netherlands since the beginning of the war in Gaza in October of last year./ REL
