The Lebanese Prime Minister calls for a ceasefire along the border with Israel

Lebanon's acting prime minister, Najib Mikati, called for an immediate ceasefire along the border with Israel, saying the war has had a devastating impact on his country.

Mikati called for the implementation of a United Nations resolution that ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah - the militant group and political party that controls most of southern Lebanon - in the summer of 2006, and allowed for the deployment of Lebanese troops along the border with Israel, in coordination with UN peacekeepers.

Mikati spoke at the opening of the Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He said the war has caused "unprecedented losses", as more than 3,000 people have been killed, including 775 women and children.

Mikati said the war between Israel and Hezbollah has also caused $8.5 billion in losses, including $3.4 billion in damages and the destruction of about 100,000 homes in various parts of the state.

Hezbollah is a terrorist group declared by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted the military wing, but not the political group of the group. The Hezbollah party has seats in the Lebanese Parliament.

"No country can bear the burden of this great destruction," said Mikati, adding that Beirut will set up a fund, to be financed by friendly countries, for the reconstruction process.

Since the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - began in October last year, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire on the border.

Tensions escalated in October, as Israel intensified airstrikes across Lebanon against Hezbollah and launched a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.
