Medvedev: Germany's conservative leader is aiming to escalate the war

Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, currently the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has accused the German conservative leader, Friedrich Merz, of inflammatory statements regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The leader of the centre-right opposition Christian Democratic Union, Merz, has said in the past that if he takes power in Germany he could send to Kiev long-range Taurus cruise missiles, which the current German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has refused to send them to Ukraine.

Medvedev wrote in Telegram that these missiles are capable of deliberately changing the course of the war in favor of Ukraine.

"But the risk of the conflict escalating to a more dangerous stage is greatly increased by cruise missile attacks," he said.

He claimed that Merz and some other European politicians "are dragging the war into their territory".

Merz, who is aiming to become Germany's new chancellor after the collapse of Scholz's center-left coalition, recently told Stern magazine that he is open to sending these missiles to Kiev.

In an interview published on Sunday, he proposed that Moscow should be given an ultimatum: If the bombing of civilians in Ukraine does not stop within 24 hours, restrictions on the use of long-range weapons supplied to Kiev should be lifted. be removed.

If that wasn't enough, Merz said, a week later Germany would send Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

Ukraine is defending itself against Russian forces with weapons provided by the West.

Medvedev, who was president of Russia from 2008 to 2012, since the war in Ukraine began in 2022, has repeatedly made threats, including threats that Russia could use nuclear weapons against the West./REL
