US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a senior Israeli official on Monday that the steps Israel has taken to improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza should lead to actual improvements on the ground, the State Department said Tuesday.
Chief diplomat Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter to their Israeli counterparts on October 13 with a list of specific steps to take to address the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian enclave amid a renewed Israeli offensive.
Washington gave Israel 30 days to comply with the request and said results on the ground would determine whether or not enough had been done in that regard. Washington has not yet said whether it thinks Israel has complied with the demands.
In a meeting on Monday, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer briefed Secretary Blinken on the policy decisions the Israeli government has taken to address the demands, as well as the Israeli military's operational changes.
"The Secretary emphasized the importance that these changes lead to immediate improvements to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, including the delivery of additional aid to civilians throughout Gaza," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
COGAT, the Israeli military agency that deals with Palestinian civil affairs, published on Sunday a list of Israel's humanitarian efforts over the past six months, "highlighting recent initiatives and detailing plans to continue support for Gaza as winter approaches."
International aid groups said on Tuesday that Israel had not only failed to comply with US demands, but had even taken steps that "dramatically worsened" the situation on the ground.
For more than a month, Israeli forces have pushed deeper into northern Gaza, surrounding hospitals and shelters and displacing new waves of people in an operation they say is aimed at preventing the regrouping of Hamas fighters./ VOA
