Russian chef found dead in Belgrade

Russian chef Aleksey Zimin, who ran a restaurant in central London and was critical of Russia's war in Ukraine, has been found dead in Belgrade at the age of 53.

The High Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade told Radio Free Europe (REL) that it was informed by the police about the death of Aleksej Zimin.

"An autopsy with toxicology has been ordered to determine the cause of death," the prosecution told REL.

Zima's death has also been confirmed by his restaurant in London, Zima.

Zimin lived in London in recent years and disagreed with official Russian policy.

Zimini's last post on Instagram was dated November 4, in which he announced that on November 7 he would prepare a special dinner at a club in Belgrade and present his recently released project Anglomania - a personal look at cultural history of Great Britain.

He hosted a cooking show on Russian channel NTV, which was cut after he posted anti-war messages on social media when Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

"Eleven years. During 22 TV seasons I had a Saturday morning prime time program on NTV. Since May it is no more... There will be no new episodes because of the anti-war stance of its host. Do I regret it? No, I'm sorry we ended up participating in the war," he wrote on Instagram at the time.

Independent Russian portal Meduza quoted journalist Mihail Fishman as saying that Zimin was much more than a talented cook and writer.

"He cooked, sang, wrote, spoke, and embodied life itself. Smart, funny, joyful. I've known him for about 30 years, maybe more, and I probably don't know many other people like him that he was so nice to be with. Fishman said.

In London, Zimin ran the Russian restaurant Zima and published a magazine of the same name.

Zimin was deputy editor-in-chief of the gastronomic magazine Afisha, and editor-in-chief of Afisha Food.

He opened several famous restaurants in Moscow and wrote for Komersant and Vedomosti newspapers.

Zimin was born in Dubna in 1971./ REL
