US media: Prosecutor Jack Smith is planning to resign

Special Prosecutor Jack Smith and members of his team plan to resign before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources.

Prosecutor Smith investigated two cases against Mr. Trump, one over secret documents Mr. Trump took to Mar-a-Lago after he ended his term and another about his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. A federal judge in Florida dismissed the case for documents in July. The Justice Department is now considering how to close Mr. Smith's election-related case.

Mr. Trump, who has denied the charges in both cases, said last month that he would fire Attorney Smith "within two seconds" of taking office.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on these developments.

Mr. Smith's intention is not to let others finish important parts of his responsibilities, according to The New York Times newspaper./ VOA
