Grossi visits Iran's underground nuclear sites

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has visited Iran's main underground uranium enrichment facilities, Fordow and Natany, Iranian state media reported on Friday.

They did not give more details about his visit to these areas.

Iran has limited inspections of its nuclear sites and barred some IAEA inspectors from entering uranium enrichment facilities.

Grossi is in Iran to try to find a diplomatic solution, where he warned days ago that "the room for negotiation... is shrinking" over Iran's advanced nuclear program.

Tehran insists that its nuclear intentions are "peaceful".

Grossi's visit took place on the eve of the IAEA board meeting, where several countries are expected to demand a response to the Islamic Republic.

Grossi's visit to Iran took place a week after Donald Trump won the US election, who during his first term in 2018 withdrew Washington from the nuclear deal Iran reached with world powers in 2015, and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

That deal called for curbs on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, and the pact aimed to prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons.

After Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal, Iran expanded its nuclear program and limited the Agency's inspections led by Grossi to nuclear plants.

The International Atomic Energy Agency and the international community have expressed their concern that Tehran has violated the limits set in the agreement on uranium enrichment, enriching uranium up to 60 percent. For nuclear weapons, 90 percent enriched uranium is required./ REL
