Trump moves quickly on appointments with impact on domestic policy

President-elect Donald Trump begins his term in January of next year, however, as VOA correspondent Carolyn Presutti reports, he is preparing the ground and making plans for the domestic policy of the next four years.

"The reason we made history today is that we will fix everything in our country," he said.

Mr. Trump's main priority is the immigration problem.

"We will have to close the borders. We want people to come to our country. They can return, but they must do so legally," he said.

Mr. Trump wooed voters with his promise of mass deportations of millions of undocumented immigrants. Experts say it would cost billions of dollars and require an organization, details of which have not been provided.

But Tom Homan, who Mr. Trump appointed to oversee the border, said he would focus on employers, not communities.

The second advantage is the reduction of inflation.

"And after the greatest political recovery in American history, we will deliver the greatest economic recovery in American history under the leadership of Donald Trump," said Vice President-elect JD Vance.

Mr. Trump has promised policies to impose tariffs on foreign goods and eliminate taxes on tips and pensions.

The third priority is government reform.

"America has given us an unparalleled and powerful mandate," says President-elect Trump.

In that term, he appointed Tesla and Space X owner Elon Musk and his former rival in the party race Vivek Ramaswamy to lead an initiative to make government more efficient and reduce bureaucracy and spending.

A Republican-majority Senate and House means the likelihood is for quick confirmations of nominees for secretaries of State, Defense and Homeland Security, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, ambassadors to the United Nations and Israel and others. These are just some of the 4,000 government positions that Mr. Trump will fill.

In about 70 days, the president-elect takes office and his second administration will have taken shape. One thing is clear now: It will look very different from the years of Mr. Biden's mandate./ VOA
