Chancellor Scholz phone call with President Putin/ asks him to start talks with

The German government announced that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin today.

The German government spokesman said Chancellor Scholz called on the Russian president to start talks with Kiev to pave the way for "a just and lasting peace", during the first conversation between the two leaders since December 2022, while the war in Ukraine continues.

Meanwhile, a source in the Ukrainian Presidency told Reuters that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned Chancellor Scholz not to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, as such an action would ease the Russian leader's isolation and prolong the war. The same source said Chancellor Scholz, a close ally of Ukraine during the war against Russia, had earlier informed President Zelenskiy of his plans to hold talks with the Russian leader.

"The Chancellor informed our President about the plans to talk with Putin. The president told him it would help Putin ease his isolation. "Putin does not want real peace, but an (international) rehabilitation," said the source.

During the hour-long conversation, Chancellor Scholtz demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and confirmed Germany's continued support for Kiev, the German government spokesman announced.

Meanwhile, according to a Kremlin announcement, Russian President Putin said that possible agreements to end the conflict in Ukraine should take into account Russia's security interests, be based on "new territorial realities" and address the causes that led to this conflict".

Berlin is the main financial supporter and the largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine, after the United States. The future support from Washington seems uncertain after the victory of Republican Donald Trump in the presidential elections./ VOA
