The President of the United States, Joe Biden, on Friday praised the cooperation between South Korea, Japan and the US, for combating what he called "dangerous and escalating cooperation" between North Korea and Russia.

"I'm proud of how far we've come," Biden said. "We have dealt with every problem together."

Biden spoke before meeting in Peru with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The meeting between them took place amid heightened concerns about the growing military partnership between North Korea and Russia, as well as Pyongyang's increased ballistic missile testing.

They met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru, at a time when North Korea has sent thousands of troops to Russia to help Moscow retake territory in the border region of Kursk after a surprise Ukrainian incursion there in August.

According to estimates by the United States, South Korea and Ukraine, about 12,000 North Korean troops have been sent to Russia.

US and South Korean intelligence officials say North Korea has also provided Russia with large quantities of munitions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also ordered a series of missile tests ahead of the November 5 US election and claims his country has made progress in building weapons to strike the US directly.

White House officials are concerned that Pyongyang could take more provocative actions before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump and the first days of his administration in January.

Biden is on a six-day visit to Latin America for the last major international summits of his presidency. After APEC, he will attend a meeting in Brazil of leaders of the Group of 20 major economies.

He is likely to face questions from world leaders about the next administration, about what Donald Trump's return to the White House will mean for them./ REL
