Austria: Russia will cut off gas supplies

Russia has notified Austria that it will cut off gas supplies from November 16, a sign that Russian gas supplies to Europe are coming to an end soon.

The gas cut means that Russia will now supply large quantities of gas to only two European countries, Hungary and Slovakia. Before it launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian gas met 40 percent of the European Union's gas supply needs.

German Chancellor Karl Nehmmer said on Friday that Austria has guaranteed fuel supply alternatives and that "no one will suffocate this winter, no house will be cold".

"Our gas storages are full and we have plenty of capacity to get gas from other regions," said Nehammer.

"We cannot be blackmailed", he added.

Austria was the first country from Western Europe to start buying gas from the Soviet Union in 1968.

This year, this supply will end after disagreements between the Russian gas company, Gazprom, and the Austrian OMV.

OMV announced that Gazprom has informed it that it will stop the gas supply from Saturday.

Gazprom has not yet commented on the news.

Austria has been one of the few European countries still dependent on Russian gas, as most countries on the continent cut imports of Russian gas after Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

OMV said it has been preparing for the expected interruption of Russian gas and added that it can still supply gas to its customers through imports from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands./ REL
