Zelensky: Putin is not interested in negotiations

Russian President Vladimir Putin "is not interested in holding negotiations to end the war, but wants to hold talks with foreign leaders to end his international isolation," the president said on November 16. Ukrainian, Volodymyr Zelensky, after Putin held a telephone conversation with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, the day before.

"I think Putin doesn't want peace at all, but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to sit down with some of the leaders [at the negotiating table]. Because for him, political isolation means destruction. It is very profitable for him to sit down, talk and disagree," Zelensky said during an interview with the Ukrainian broadcaster on November 16.

"He cannot travel and negotiations mean he can go somewhere... This would mean the end of isolation for him," Zelensky said.

However, Zelensky said Ukraine will end the conflict as soon as possible and acknowledged that the situation on the battlefield in the east of the country, where Russia is making advances, was difficult as the Ukrainian army has fewer soldiers and less weapons than the Russian army.

"As for us, we must do everything so that this war ends next year, ends through diplomacy," Zelensky said. He added that he wants to talk directly with the US president-elect, Donald Trump, and not through intermediaries. But such contact, according to American laws, Zelensky said, is impossible before Trump takes office.

"As the president of Ukraine, I will only take the conversation with the US president seriously, with all the respect I have for other people," Zelensky said.

He criticized the conversation Scholz held with Putin on November 15, warning that it had opened "Pandora's Box", undermining efforts to isolate Putin and end the war in Ukraine "through a just peace".
