Azerbaijan, activists protest inside the UN climate change conference 

Hundreds of activists gathered inside one of the plenary halls where the annual United Nations climate conference is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, to protest as part of a campaign called a global "day of action" for climate justice.

Protesters held placards calling for more climate funding, which includes money for the transition to clean energy and climate change adaptation.

The protest in Baku is expected to be accompanied by protests in other countries.

As the first week of climate talks draws to a close, negotiations continue over how much richer countries will pay developing countries to adapt to global warming.

Negotiators aim to reach an agreement to give hundreds of billions of dollars to the poorest countries.

Some experts have said that $1 trillion a year or more is needed to offset the damage caused by climate change.

The talks are taking place amid a flurry of criticism of the climate conference.

A group of former heads of state and environmental experts said the UN's annual climate conferences were no longer adequate for environmental protection and needed to be reformed. They published an open letter of criticism, while the annual meeting of the UN in Baku continues./ VOA
