President-elect Trump nominates Chris Wright as Secretary of Energy

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped oil company founder Chris Wright to lead the Energy Department as his new administration continues to take shape.

Mr Trump's transition team formally announced the appointment on Saturday. On Friday, President-elect Trump announced the creation of the National Energy Council, to be headed by former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, nominated for the post of Interior Secretary.

In this role, Mr. Burgum will lead a structure that spans all executive branch agencies involved in issues related to energy permits, generation, distribution, transportation and regulations in this area, Mr. Trump said in a statement. As chairman of the National Energy Council, Mr. Burgum will have a seat on the National Security Council, the president-elect said.

Mr. Wright, chief executive of Denver, Colorado-based Liberty Energy, has no political experience and has written extensively on the need to increase energy production from non-renewable sources to lift people out of poverty.

U.S. oil production reached the highest level a country has ever produced during President Biden's administration, and it is unclear how much the new Energy Secretary and the incoming administration will increase oil production.

Most oil drilling decisions are made by private companies working on land not owned by the federal government.

The Department of Energy handles United States energy diplomacy, administers the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, and directs grant and loan programs to advance energy technologies, such as the Office of Loan Programs.

The secretary also oversees the US nuclear weapons complex, nuclear energy waste disposal and 17 national laboratories.
