Putin warns the US with a new nuclear doctrine

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday approved an updated nuclear doctrine that states Russia may consider using nuclear weapons if attacked with conventional missiles backed by a nuclear power.

The decision to change Russia's official doctrine is the Kremlin's response to a reported decision by the administration of US President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to fire long-range US missiles deep into Russia.

The updated doctrine, which lays out the threats that could prompt Russia's leadership to consider nuclear attack, states that an attack by warplanes, drones or conventional missiles could be considered such a threat.

According to this doctrine, any aggression against Russia by a state that is a member of a coalition will be considered by Moscow as aggression by the entire coalition.

A few weeks before the November US election, Putin ordered changes to the nuclear doctrine to emphasize that any conventional attack on Russia aided by a nuclear power could be considered a joint attack against Russia.

The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has fueled the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962./REL
