German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is facing growing pressure to step down as the Social Democrats' candidate for prime minister in February's snap election.

Senior party officials are reported to have joined calls for him to make way for Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, as new polls show Scholz's popularity has slipped further.

Germany will hold a general election seven months earlier than planned due to the collapse of Scholz's governing coalition earlier this month.

Scholz, on the other hand, has given signals that he intends to compete again for the chancellor's mandate.

However, Norbert Walter-Borjans, former leader of the Social-Democrats, has said he believes Pistorius would have a better chance of defeating the conservative candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz.

"Scholz has saved our state from many threats in extremely difficult times," Walter-Borjans told the Rheinische Post daily.

"Well, Merz can only be defeated with a candidate for chancellor who has the strength to make a difference through self-criticism", he added.

"This has been Scholz's weak point so far."

Pistorius has won the first position in the ranking of the most popular politicians in Germany, in the list published by the newspaper Bild on Tuesday, while Scholz has fallen from the 19th position to the 20th./ REL
