US Senate approves bill to end government shutdown

The US Senate has approved a key bill that could end the longest-running US government shutdown within days.

The draft law was approved by a simple majority – 60 votes in favor and 40 against.

Almost all Republicans voted in favor, as did eight Democrats, who split from the party to approve the document.

The agreement foresees that the Government will be financed until the end of January.

The House of Representatives must now approve the bill before US President Donald Trump can sign it into law. Trump has signaled his willingness to sign it.

The deal was reached over the weekend, after some Democrats joined Republicans and signed an agreement to bring federal workers back to work and restore essential services.

Many government services have been suspended since October and about 1.4 million federal workers are on unpaid leave, or are working without pay.

The government shutdown has affected many services, especially air traffic and the distribution of aid to 41 million low-income Americans.

On Monday alone, more than 2,400 flights in the United States were canceled, while over 9,000 others were postponed.

If the US government remains closed for a longer period, economic growth could take a negative turn in the fourth quarter, especially if air traffic does not return to normal by Thanksgiving, according to White House economic adviser Kevin Hasset.

Thanksgiving falls on November 27 this year./REL
