Left prison cell today/ Sarkozy: I will work to prove my innocence

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has made his first public comments since being released from prison. Sarkozy, who described his three weeks in prison as a nightmare, will serve the rest of his sentence outside pending an appeal.

In his response, he stated that he will work to prove his innocence, while appealing the conviction for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to obtain election campaign funds from Libya.

"The law has been applied. I will now prepare for an appeal. My energy is focused solely on proving my innocence. The truth will triumph ," Sarkozy wrote on his social media following his release.

Sarkozy was jailed on October 21 after a Paris court sentenced him to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to obtain campaign funds for his 2007 presidential run from the regime of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Meanwhile, an appeals court in Paris today approved his request for release. Under the conditions set by the court, he will be prohibited from speaking to justice ministry officials, including Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin. He will also be prohibited from leaving France. /CNA
