Major power cuts in Ukraine due to Russian attacks

Kiev and several Ukrainian regions are facing severe power shortages as crews struggle to repair infrastructure damaged by Russian airstrikes.

Power cuts will occur in most regions, lasting from eight to 16 hours, Ukrainian energy company Ukrenergo has announced, saying the situation will remain the same for several days.

"The reductions are a result of massive Russian drone and missile attacks on energy infrastructure," the company said.

"It's hard to remember when there have been so many direct attacks on the energy sector since the start of the occupation," said Ukrainian energy company spokeswoman Svitlana Hrynchuk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the nation that "repair teams are working around the clock in all regions."

Even before the start of the seasonal change in Ukraine, Russia had intensified its campaign to damage the power grid, natural gas storage facilities, and pipelines in an attempt to demoralize the Ukrainians.

Meanwhile, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, has warned of the risk of military attacks on nuclear power plants.

"I continue to call for maximum military restraint, in order to guarantee nuclear safety and avoid accidents with major radiological consequences," he said in a statement.

Grossi announced that Ukraine's largest nuclear power plant, located in Zaporizhia, has begun to access the energy reserve network again for the first time in six months.

The plant, which is under Russian control, has faced major power problems, which has jeopardized the cooling of essential water and the operation of all pumps.

The Russian Defense Ministry, on the other hand, said it had launched a "massive high-precision strike" aimed at targeting weapons production centers and energy facilities in Ukraine.

This situation has resulted in the suspension of several subways across Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country's economy with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes. /REL
