US attacks two suspected drug trafficking ships in the Pacific / 6 people die

A new US attack on two ships suspected of being involved in drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific Ocean has resulted in six fatalities, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced today.

"These vessels were known to our agencies as being involved in illegal drug trafficking, were transporting drugs, and were traveling along a known drug trafficking route ," Hegseth said in a post on X accompanied by video of the attack.

The US has carried out frequent airstrikes in the Pacific, mainly in the Caribbean, since early September, targeting speedboats it says belong to drug traffickers. After yesterday's attack, at least 76 people have been killed in these US strikes.

However, the US government has not presented evidence that the ships that were bombed were carrying drugs, and foreign leaders, members of Congress, legal experts and family members of those killed are seeking evidence. Experts question the legality of these raids in foreign or international waters, against suspects who are neither arrested nor questioned. The

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called these US operations against suspected drug traffickers on ships off the coast of South America "unacceptable", noting that they violate international human rights law. /CNA
