Hill testifies in The Hague: First contact with the KLA occurred in the summer

Christopher Hill, the former US Special Envoy during the Kosovo war, is testifying in defense of Hashim Thaçi in The Hague. During his testimony, Hill stated that his first contact with the KLA occurred in the summer of 1998 in Tirana, Albania.

“As I was working with my staff and others, we needed to find a KLA official or group of officials that we could talk to about the KLA. I should add that I worked on this for a while without success, and we came to the conclusion that there was no such leadership. So this was a group of people at the local level, which was a much more accurate description of what we were dealing with,” Hill said, referring to the KLA.

He added that in Tirana he met someone who was described to him as the leader of the KLA.

"My colleagues and I came to the conclusion that he operates within this movement, but he cannot speak on behalf of the KLA. We continued to work to find people who we could speak as responsible for this. We went to Likoc in the summer and fall of '98," Hill said.

Hill further said that he did not remember the name of the first person from the KLA he had met, but as soon as Xhavit Haliti's name was mentioned, he claimed to have./ CNA
