Documentary scandal/ Trump threatens BBC with legal action

A serious crisis of credibility has rocked the BBC, following the resignations of director-general Tim Davey and director of news Deborah Turnes, following revelations that the "Panorama" documentary misinformed the public with an altered version of a speech by US President Donald Trump.

The US president has reportedly sent a letter to the BBC, threatening legal action for fraud in the presentation of his speech. The BBC confirmed that it had received the letter and announced that it would respond in due course. The

BBC is accused of "distorting" fragments of Trump's speech to make it appear as if he was directly calling for violent action on the day protesters stormed the Capitol. Specifically, the documentary "Panorama" had combined phrases from different parts of the speech, removing the part where Trump asked his supporters to act "peacefully and patriotically".

The incident brought more than 500 complaints from viewers and strong criticism from Washington, with Trump's spokeswoman, Caroline Leavitt, calling the incident "deliberate misinformation" and "100% fake news".

BBC chairman Samir Shah wrote to the House of Commons apologising for the error that led to the mistaken impression that the US president was inciting violence. Shah said management had already taken corrective action, changes to the code of conduct and disciplinary measures, rejecting accusations that the BBC had overlooked the issue. /CNA
