US Defense Secretary Hegseth: Colombian drug smuggling ship hit, 3 killed

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said today that US forces attacked a drug smuggling ship, killing three people. The secretary said the ship was linked to a Colombian guerrilla group.

"The vessel was known from our intelligence to be involved in illegal narcotics smuggling, was traveling along a known narcotics trafficking route, and was transporting significant quantities of narcotics," Hegseth said in a post on the 'X' platform.

Hegseth said the attack targeted a ship linked to the Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional, a Colombian guerrilla group that the US has considered a terrorist organization since the 1990s.

The secretary said the attack occurred in international waters and within the U.S. Southern Command area of ??responsibility, which includes the Caribbean Sea.

The Trump administration has said the US is in a non-international armed conflict with drug cartels, arguing that the narcotics they smuggle kill tens of thousands of Americans each year, constituting an armed attack./ CNA
