After more than a week of fighting, Afghanistan's Taliban government and

Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban government have agreed to an immediate ceasefire after more than a week of deadly fighting.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry, which brokered the talks alongside Turkey, said both sides had agreed to establish mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability.

Both sides claim to have inflicted heavy casualties during the recent clashes, the heaviest fighting since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Islamabad has long accused the Taliban of harboring armed groups that carry out attacks in Pakistan, which Islamabad denies.

Clashes intensified along the 2,600-kilometer mountainous border that separates the two countries after the Taliban accused Pakistan of carrying out attacks in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Pakistan was a major supporter of the Taliban after their overthrow in 2001 by a US-led invasion.

But relations deteriorated after Islamabad accused the group of providing a safe haven to the Pakistani Taliban, who have launched an armed insurgency against government forces. /CNA
