"I have no doubt" that Israel's army respects the rules of international law. At the EU summit, it is intended that we "together make it clear once again that we support Israel in defending its country against the terrible attack of Hamas", emphasized Scholz.

He added that the EU is committed to the release of hostages held under the violence of the radical Islamic Hamas, as well as to the humanitarian support of the residents of the Gaza Strip, who themselves are "victims of Hamas", said Scholz. "That's why it is important to advance with humanitarian aid", emphasized the chancellor.

The European Union, however, is still looking for a unique line regarding the conflict in the Middle East. Member countries such as Belgium criticize Israel for its actions against the Gaza Strip. EU Council President Charles Michel also stressed at the summit, which continues its work on Friday (27.10.2023), that Israel must "act in accordance with international law".

No unanimity for the cease-fire in the Gaza Strip

The EU member states are not unanimous on the issue of declaring a "ceasefire", more precisely a "humanitarian ceasefire", as was revealed during the meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg. Some countries, such as Spain, Ireland and Slovenia supported this request formulated for the first time by the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.

Other countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria expressed their opposition. These countries fear that such requests can be evaluated as interference in the right of self-defense of the state of Israel. Now the heads of state and government must find a common position./ DW
