White House: Russia is executing soldiers who don't follow orders

The United States has information that the Russian military is executing soldiers who disobey orders related to the war with Ukraine, the White House said Thursday.

"We have information that the Russian military has executed soldiers who refused to follow orders," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

"We also have information that Russian commanders are warning that they will execute entire units if they try to withdraw due to Ukrainian artillery fire," Mr Kirby said.

Representatives of the Kremlin, the Russian defense ministry and the Russian embassy in the United States did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ukrainian officials said Wednesday that despite heavy losses, Russian forces are continuing their efforts to capture the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka.

Mr Kirby said Russia's mobilized forces were untrained, ill-equipped and unprepared for combat.

He said the Russian army was sending groups of poorly trained soldiers to the front line. National Security Council spokesman Kirby said threats to execute soldiers were barbaric.
