The conflict escalates in the Middle East/ The US military hits two facilities

US relations with Iran have been strained in recent weeks due to opposing positions on the Israel-Hamas war.

Over the past evening, the US has struck two facilities in eastern Syria, alleging that they were used by Iranian forces and related groups.

The strikes on the two buildings were confirmed by the Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, who said that they were carried out in self-defense.

According to him, the US is trying to protect US personnel in Iraq and Syria and their actions were in response to recent drone attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups.

"These Iranian-backed attacks against US forces are unacceptable and must be stopped. Iran wants to hide its hand and deny its role in these attacks against our forces. We will not allow it," he said. warning that the US will take further action if attacks against US forces continue.

Austin said this situation in northern Syria is separate from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

American officials claim that the United States did not coordinate with Israel or inform them in advance of the airstrikes.

We recall that the United States has about 900 troops stationed in Syria and 2,500 in neighboring Iraq. 

US troops have been attacked at least 12 times in Iraq and four times in Syria since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began. The Pentagon attributes these attacks to Iranian groups operating in the region and declares that a total of 21 American soldiers have been injured./ CNA
