UK-EU summit postponed after Starmer resignation

A summit between the UK and the EU, which was scheduled to be held in Brussels on July 22, will be postponed following the resignation of Keir Starmer.

Starmer was due to meet senior EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa for talks on food, energy and a youth mobility scheme, building on a so-called reset in UK-EU relations that the outgoing prime minister signed last year.

Starmer saw the push for closer ties with the EU as central to his efforts to revive the premiership and boost economic growth, focusing on the issue in a landmark speech he gave after the Labour Party's disastrous local election results.

But Costa said on Monday: "Now we probably have to postpone it, but we are reassessing the possibility of this new summit."

"But my wish is that his successor can continue this good path to restoring our relationship with the United Kingdom."
