Rules for visiting the Acropolis, from September the number of visitors is

Only 20,000 visitors a day will be allowed to visit the Acropolis of Athens, Greece's most famous archaeological site, starting September 4. There will also be limits on the number of visitors allowed in each hour.

So far, about 23,000 people a day have entered the monument complex, with large groups visiting before noon.

The Greek Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, said that the controls are necessary to prevent obstacles and overcrowding in the UNESCO World Heritage site, writes Euronews.

There will be no time limit on visits, although Mendoni said people who come on organized tours or from cruise ships, who make up about 50% of the daily visitors, spend an average of 45 minutes at the site.

What time is the Acropolis open?
It is open from 08:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Sunday. Under the new rules, only a certain number of visitors will be allowed in each hour.

"The measure will address the need to protect the monument, which is the main thing for us, as well as improving the experience of visitors", said Mendoni.

Acropolis responds to heat wave
Greek authorities closed access to the Acropolis and other ancient sites during midday hours last month, at the height of a heat wave that also sparked massive fires across the country.

They also installed awnings as protection from the sun for people lining up to see the 5th century BC Acropolis temples./ CNA.al
