US partially evacuates embassy in Niger

The United States has decided to partially evacuate the American Embassy in Niger, after last week's coup.

Hundreds of foreign nationals have already been evacuated from the country after the French Embassy was attacked by protesters on Sunday.

The leader of the coup, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, has warned against "any interference in the internal affairs" of the state.

Nigeria is a major producer of uranium and lies on a key migration route between North Africa and the Mediterranean.

The US State Department has said that Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on Wednesday with ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, and that the US is committed to restoring democracy to Niger through an elected government.

The spokesman for the US Department of State, Matthew Miller, has said that despite the partial evacuation, the embassy in Niger will continue to be open.

"We are committed to the people and our ties with Niger, and we are engaged at the highest diplomatic level," he said.

The US is a major donor of humanitarian and security aid to Niger, and has warned in advance that the coup could result in the suspension of all aid.

France, which once had Niger as a colony, and the European Union have already suspended all aid to this country.

The Economic Community of West African States, a bloc of 15 West African states, has imposed sanctions on this country, which includes blocking all commercial transactions with Niger, and freezing all state assets in the regional central bank./ REL
