Pope Francis, meeting with victims of sexual abuse by clergy

Pope Francis has held a private meeting with victims of sexual abuse by religious clergy, as part of a five-day visit to Portugal.

Through a statement, the Vatican said that the meeting was held on Wednesday.

A report last year showed that at least 4,815 children had been abused in Portugal and that the Church had tried "systematically" to cover up the case.

In a mass held in the evening in Lisbon, the Pope said that the Church should listen to the "oil of the victims".

He has added that the scandal leads us to "continuous cleansing", and that the increase in anger has contributed to greater disconnection of the practice of religion.

In the meeting that was held at the diplomatic mission of the Holy See in Portugal, 13 victims of abuse participated.

In February, an independent commission created by the Catholic Church in Portugal published a report detailing the experiences of 564 people who said they were abused by priests or other Church officials.

This commission – similar to audit commissions that exist in Europe and America – has analyzed cases dating back to 1950.

In many cases, witnesses have also spoken about other abused minors, bringing the total number to thousands.

While presenting the findings, child psychiatrist Pedro Strecht said that the assessment represents the "absolute minimum" of cases and that the figures are only the "tip of the iceberg"./ REL
