Hundreds of foreign observers monitor the election process in Georgia

Georgians are voting today in what many of the country's residents see as an opportunity to join the European Union. The process is being monitored by hundreds of foreign observers.

Representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe were at polling stations in Tbilisi and across the country to observe the voting process.

The election race has been dominated by foreign policy and marked by a fierce battle for votes as well as accusations of smear campaigns.

Some Georgians expressed concern that they were being pressured to vote for the ruling Georgian Dream party. Meanwhile, the opposition accused it of waging a "hybrid war" against its own citizens.

Ahead of the parliamentary election, Bidzina Ivanishvili - a shadowy billionaire who founded the Georgian Dream party and made his fortune in Russia - vowed again to outlaw opposition parties if his party wins the elections.

Polls show that about 80% of Georgians are in favor of the country's membership in the European Union. The country's constitution obliges its leaders to commit to membership in the European bloc as well as NATO.

But Brussels has blocked Georgia's membership process indefinitely, after the ruling party passed a law in June that attacks freedom of speech.

Many Georgians fear that the Georgian Dream is leading the country towards authoritarianism and destroying the country's hopes of becoming part of the EU./ VOA
