New poll: Harris, Trump tied for popular vote

Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump have equal support in the US electorate, with 48% each of the popular vote for the November 5 US presidential election, according to a recent poll by the New York Times and the College Siena published on Friday.

In recent elections, Democrats have had an advantage in the popular vote even as they lost the Electoral College and thus the White House. The poll comes less than two weeks before the election. This poll is similar to other polls in that they all come up with close candidates, meaning it's hard to predict who will win. This year's presidential election could be decided by a small number of voters.

Ms Harris and Mr Trump remain effectively tied in support after the most tumultuous three months in modern American political history. A presidential debate widely attributed to President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race, two assassination attempts on Mr. Trump, dozens of rallies in seven states that will determine the outcome of the election and hundreds of millions spent on advertising have apparently failed to change the trajectory of the race.

The latest poll offers a window into national sentiment at the moment, but the presidential election will be decided in the seven crucial states where Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump have devoted most of their efforts and resources./ VOA
