5 Israeli soldiers are killed during the fighting in Lebanon

Israel's military announced late Thursday that five of its soldiers were killed during fighting in southern Lebanon, where it has been battling Hezbollah militants for several weeks.

Hezbollah, which controls southern Lebanon, has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted its armed wing but not its political party.

The Israeli military released the names of four of the soldiers killed, saying in a statement that they "fell during fighting in southern Lebanon" on Wednesday.

Later, she said another soldier was also killed Thursday in southern Lebanon.

The number of Israeli soldiers killed fighting in southern Lebanon has risen to 27 since the army launched the ground operation in late September, AFP reported based on army data.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah erupted a year ago when the Iran-backed group began firing rockets into northern Israel in support of the Palestinian militant group Hamas - designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - at the start of the war in Gaza. .

In recent months, the conflict has escalated, as Israel has been relentlessly bombing southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut and the Bekaa Valley, killing many of Hezbollah's top leaders and sending ground troops across the border.

For its part, Hezbollah has fired rockets deeper into Israel.

Israel says its war in Lebanon is aimed at making northern Israel safe for tens of thousands of people who have been forced from their homes over the past year by Hezbollah rocket attacks.

Israel's expanded operation has displaced more than 1.2 million people, according to the Lebanese government, which says more than 2,500 people have been killed and more than 10,000 wounded during a year of fighting.

Hezbollah rockets have killed at least 54 people in Israel, more than half of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities./ REL
