Blinken visits Qatar to discuss Gaza ceasefire

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Doha on Thursday for meetings with Qatari officials who have played an important role as mediators with Hamas as the United States struggles to unblock ceasefire negotiations between Israel and the militant group.

This is Secretary Blinken's 11th trip to the Middle East since the war began.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army announced on Thursday that an Israeli attack killed three of its soldiers, including an officer, as they were evacuating the wounded from southern Lebanon. In other developments, French President Emmanuel Macron said his country would send a 100 million euro aid package to support Lebanon.

The war between Israel and Hamas began after the Palestinian group's militants attacked Israeli settlements on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and kidnapping 250 others. In Gaza, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's offensive, according to local officials, who do not distinguish between civilian and militant casualties.

United Nations humanitarian officials are reporting "terrible levels of death, injury and destruction" in northern Gaza, where Israel is carrying out yet another major operation.

Israel is also fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon. Lebanon's health ministry says 2,500 people have been killed and 12,000 injured in the past year. Fighting in Lebanon has forced 1.2 million people to flee their homes, including more than 400,000 children, according to the UN children's agency.

Hezbollah announced on Wednesday that Hashem Safieddine, one of the organization's top officials who was expected to become the militant group's next leader, has been killed by an Israeli airstrike. Over the past few weeks, Israeli strikes have killed most of Hezbollah's top leaders./VOA
