At least 17 killed after an Israeli attack in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on a school housing displaced people in central Gaza killed at least 17 people, mostly women and children, Palestinian health officials said on October 24.

42 people were also injured during the attack on the refugee camp in Nuseriat, according to the Avda hospital, which received the injured.

According to health officials, among the dead were seven children - the youngest 11 months old - as well as three women.

The Israeli army has not yet commented on this attack.

In recent months, Israel has attacked several schools, which have been converted into shelters, saying they are targeting fighters from Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - hiding among civilians. Women and children are often killed in these attacks.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking nearly 250 hostages. About 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, a third of whom are believed to be dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the victims were fighters, but says more than half of the victims were women and children. The Israeli army has claimed to have killed more than 17,000 fighters, without providing evidence for this claim.

As a result of the war, close to 90 percent of Gaza's population of 2.3 million have been displaced several times. Hundreds of thousands of people are sheltered in tented camps./REL
