DNA tests identify 150-year-old skull found in wall of house

Investigators have determined that a skull discovered in 1978 in the wall of an Illinois home belonged to an Indiana teenager who died more than 150 years ago, officials said Thursday.

According to records from the Kane County medical examiner's office, the skull was found while a Batavia homeowner was doing renovations. At that time the police opened an investigation but without success and the skull was sent to a warehouse of a Batavia city museum.

In March 2021, museum supervisors discovered the skull during an inventory and sent it to the police coroner's office.

Othram Laboratories in Texas, which works with law enforcement, was able to build a DNA profile found on the skull that suggested it belonged to Esther Granger, a 17-year-old woman who died in childbirth in Merriville of Indiana in 1866. Investigators matched the DNA profile to Mrs. Granger's great-grandson, Wayne Silvar, which allowed her identity to be confirmed.

Kafka was buried in Batavia in August at the city's expense.

It is unclear how the skull ended up in the city of Batavia. Records show she was buried in Lake County, Indiana. Kane County Coroner Rob Russell speculated in a press release that grave robbers may have exhumed her body to sell to doctors looking to learn more about human anatomy./ VOA
