Protests in Serbia/ Commissioner Kos: New government should think about

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has called on Serbia's next government to ensure the country gets back on track for EU membership. She warned that accession was at risk if the country did not address key issues.

The European Union's enlargement chief has backed calls by protesters in Serbia to fight corruption and promote the rule of law, as she insisted the country is back on track in its bid to join the bloc.

"Serbia must return to the European path," Kos said in an interview with European Newsroom.

The protests began in November after a deadly roof collapse at a train station sparked an outpouring of public anger over deep-rooted corruption. The pressure from the protests led to the resignation of the prime minister and the fall of the government.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? claims that student-led protests are threatening peace and stability.

This month, Vu?i? nominated a political novice, ?uro Macut, an endocrinologist, to lead the government. Macut has until April 18 to convince parliament to approve a new government. If he fails, Vu?i? could be forced to call new elections.

Brussels has warned Belgrade of the risk of damaging its membership bid./CNA
