President Trump wants to reopen Alcatraz prison

The White House has requested $152 million to reopen the infamous former Alcatraz prison, responding to President Donald Trump's call a year ago to turn the island, now a popular tourist destination in San Francisco Bay, back into a "prison."

The request was part of the White House budget proposal for fiscal year 2027.

Such spending requests are typically treated by lawmakers in Congress as proposals. The budget seeks funds for the Federal Bureau of Prisons to cover the first year of work to rebuild Alcatraz into a maximum-security prison.

Alcatraz, opened in 1934, was considered the most secure prison in America, given its island location, icy waters and strong currents. No successful escapes were officially recorded, although five prisoners are listed in history as missing and presumed drowned. Before its closure, it was home to notorious criminals such as Al Capone and James "Whitey" Bulger. Alcatraz closed in 1969 and is under the control of the National Park Service. /CNA
