Prisoner amnesty/ 2,000 people in Cuba gain freedom

The Cuban government has announced the release of 2,010 prisoners, in one of the largest amnesties in recent years.

The decision was made public on Thursday, April 3, through the official newspaper Granma, at a time when the island faces increased international pressure, particularly from the Donald Trump administration.

According to the authorities, the amnesty was granted on the basis of good behavior, health condition and the nature of the criminal offenses. Those released include young people, women, people over 60 and foreign citizens. However, the list excludes those convicted of serious crimes such as murder, sexual assault or acts against authority.

Human Rights Watch has repeatedly highlighted that Cuba arrests and punishes dissidents, including activists, journalists, and political opponents.

Havana has undertaken similar releases in the past as part of international agreements. In early 2025, Cuba released 553 prisoners after negotiations with the United States and the Vatican, during which the Joe Biden administration pledged to ease some sanctions. That deal was later canceled by Trump, leading to the temporary suspension of the release process.

The official announcement did not directly mention the US, linking the decision to the religious celebrations of Holy Week and Easter. However, tense relations with Washington and recent economic measures have significantly aggravated the situation on the island.

The Trump administration has taken steps to restrict Cuba's oil supply, including actions in Venezuela and threats of tariffs on Mexico, with the aim of pushing for political and economic reforms in the communist-run country.

Cuba's energy crisis has worsened significantly, with severe fuel shortages and frequent power outages. In March, the country experienced two total blackouts in one week, leaving over 10 million residents without power.
