Middle East Tensions/Great Britain: Iran has taken Hormuz hostage

The UK has launched an international diplomatic initiative to address the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main arteries of global energy trade.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper held a virtual meeting with representatives of over 40 countries, including European countries and international partners, to coordinate efforts to reopen this vital sea route.

"We've seen Iran seize an international shipping lane and use it to hold the global economy hostage. This is hitting Gulf trade routes, but also supplies of natural gas to Asia, fertilizers to Africa and jet fuel to the world," Cooper said.

The crisis has escalated after Iran took measures that have effectively blocked the sea crossing, in response to recent attacks by the United States and Israel.

In this context, the participants in the meeting are considering joint diplomatic and economic measures, as well as ways to guarantee the safety of ships and crews stranded in the area.

"At this meeting, we will focus on diplomatic and international measures, including the mobilization of all our economic and political tools, cooperation with industry and insurance companies, as well as concrete actions to ensure the safety of ships and the sustainable opening of the strait," said Cooper.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stressed that the international community must consider all options for restoring freedom of navigation, at a time when energy prices are rising significantly on global markets.
