Days after Maduro's arrest, Washington and Caracas discuss exporting

Just days after the operation to capture Nicolas Maduro and transfer him to the United States to stand trial on drug trafficking charges, Venezuelan and American officials are in talks to export Venezuelan crude oil to the United States.

Reuters reported that US refineries in the Gulf of Mexico could process heavy crude from Venezuela, according to five sources familiar with the matter. They were importing about 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) before Washington imposed energy sanctions.

Venezuela has millions of barrels of oil in tankers and storage tanks that it has been unable to transport to buyers due to the blockade imposed by Donald Trump in mid-December.

Venezuela's state-owned oil company PDVSA has already been forced to cut production due to the embargo, as it runs out of storage space for its oil. If PDVSA cannot find a way to export oil, it will have to cut production even further.

A deal to sell this "trapped" crude oil to refineries in the United States would take it away from China, which has been Venezuela's largest buyer over the past decade and especially since 2020 when the US imposed sanctions on companies involved in oil trade with Venezuela.

It was not immediately clear how PDVSA, which is under sanctions, would earn revenue from oil sales. The White House, Venezuelan government officials and PDVSA have not commented on the incident. /CNA
