Merz: Sectors of the German economy in a very critical situation

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz shared an unusual statement regarding the country's economy.

In a four-page letter to MPs from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Merz outlines his priorities for 2026 and acknowledges that the decisions taken so far have not sufficiently improved the competitiveness of the economy, while acknowledging that the situation in some areas is very critical.

According to the Chancellor, this year the emphasis will be on making the right policy decisions to radically improve the business environment.

"Solving these problems will strengthen trust in politics and social cohesion," the chancellor emphasizes.

In his letter, Merz also points out that labor and energy costs, bureaucratic and tax burdens in Germany remain very high. /CNA
