"They cannot declare themselves supreme judges"/ Russia condemns US

Russia has strongly condemned the latest US military operation against Venezuela, stressing that Washington's actions marked a dangerous return to lawlessness.

"The attack on the leader of Venezuela, accompanied by the deaths of dozens of Venezuelan and Cuban citizens, has, in the eyes of many, become a harbinger of a return to the era of lawlessness and US dominance with force, chaos and lawlessness.

"There is and cannot be any justification for the crime cynically committed by the United States in Caracas, and we strongly condemn the act of armed aggression by the US against Venezuela, in violation of all international legal norms ," ??said Russia's UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya at the Security Council meeting.

He called on Washington to immediately release Maduro and his wife, noting that any existing problems or conflicts between the United States and Venezuela should be resolved through dialogue.

Nebenzia said the US is openly seeking control over Venezuela's resources. Warning of wider consequences, Nebenzia said the bell is ringing for all UN member states and for the future of the organization itself, adding that silence would essentially constitute the blessing of continued violations of international law.

"We cannot allow the United States to proclaim itself as some kind of supreme judge ," he said.

Today's extraordinary session of the UN Security Council comes after the official request of the permanent mission of Venezuela, sent on January 3, with the support of China and Russia. /CNA
