EC: US ??actions in Venezuela create opportunities for democratic transition

The European Commission said today that US actions in Venezuela are creating an opportunity for a democratic transition in the country.

European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho recalled that Nicolas Maduro lacks the legitimacy of a democratically elected leader and added that the weekend's events create an opportunity for a democratic transition, which must be led by the Venezuelan people.

At the same time, Pinho underlined the need to respect International Law and the United Nations Charter, as stressed in the declaration adopted yesterday by the 26 EU countries (except Hungary). However, she refused to characterize the US action in Venezuela as an invasion, intervention or aggressive act.

For her part, the EU spokesperson for foreign policy stressed that respecting the will of the Venezuelan people remains the only way forward and underlined that the country must restore democracy and pave the way out of the current crisis.

As she noted, the EU respects the legitimacy of those democratically elected in Venezuela, while the next steps should include dialogue aimed at a democratic transition.

This dialogue should include Edmundo González Urrutia, who lives in exile in Spain, as well as opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado. /CNA
