Greek farmers escalate protests/ Deputy Prime Minister: If the blockade

Greek farmers stationed on the highway connecting Athens and Thessaloniki are preparing to escalate their protests over delays in European Union subsidies and other grievances, in line with decisions taken at a nationwide meeting held on Sunday in Malgara, west of Thessaloniki.

According to organizers, protesters plan to disrupt traffic on the overpass serving the Athens-Thessaloniki lanes at noon, with no announcement on when the road will reopen. Farmers describe the hours leading up to the action as critical.

Farmers in Nikaia are also scheduled to hold another meeting on Monday afternoon, during which members of the coordinating committee will inform participants on the conclusions reached in Malgara, decisions taken by other farmer groups across the country, and the overall planning of the next phase of mobilizations, as reported by Greek media outlet Kathimerini.

Among the measures agreed is a 48-hour total "blackout" on Thursday and Friday, during which the protests are expected to expand beyond the intersections affected so far. As part of the escalation, tractors and agricultural vehicles from Nikaia will move to the Makrychori toll booths on the Athens-Thessaloniki highway on Tuesday, where farmers plan to remove toll barriers for two hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Farmers warned that protest actions will continue to intensify if they do not receive concrete answers to their demands.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis has said that the government is always ready to engage in dialogue with farmers, but will enforce the law if they continue to block roads. /CNA
